Tile Warpage and Levelling Systems

One of the main reasons tile levelling systems have become so widely used is that they help minimise the effect of tile warpage.

During the manufacturing process, tiles are fired at temperatures exceeding 1,200°C. As they cool, very slight curvature can naturally occur. This is known as warpage or bowing.

Although modern manufacturing keeps these tolerances extremely small and within recognised industry standards, even minor curvature can become noticeable with today's large-format and rectified tiles, particularly when narrow grout joints are used.

How Levelling Systems Work

Tile levelling systems help pull neighbouring tiles into the same plane while the adhesive cures, reducing visible lippage caused by these slight manufacturing tolerances.

It is important to understand that levelling systems do not remove the warpage within a tile. Instead, they help minimise the difference in height between adjacent tiles, creating a flatter and more consistent finished surface.

Bond Offset and Warpage

Many manufacturers also recommend limiting the offset of long rectangular tiles, such as using a one-third bond rather than a half bond, as this helps reduce the visual effect of any natural warpage.
