Frequently Asked Questions

Is TileFinder free to use?
Yes, TileFinder is completely free for customers. You can search, filter, and browse tiles from local shops without any cost. We help you find the right tile and connect you directly with the shop.
Do I buy tiles through TileFinder?
No. TileFinder is a search and discovery platform. When you find a tile you like, you contact the shop directly via the enquire button. You buy from the shop, not from us. This means you get proper trade advice, can visit the showroom, and deal with a real local business.
What are nominal tile sizes?
Nominal size is the tile size rounded to the nearest whole millimetre. For example, a tile that measures 316mm is listed as 320mm. This is standard industry practice and makes it easier to search and compare tiles across different manufacturers and shops.
How does the postcode search work?
Enter your postcode (or just the first part like BS1 or M1) and choose a radius. TileFinder will show you tiles from shops within that distance. You can sort by nearest first to see what is closest to you.
What does "rectified" mean?
Rectified tiles have been precision-cut after firing so all edges are perfectly straight and uniform. This allows them to be laid with very narrow grout joints (typically 1.5–2mm) for a clean, modern look.
What do the slip ratings mean?
Slip ratings (R9 to R13) measure how slip-resistant a tile is. R9 is the minimum for indoor dry areas. R10 is suitable for bathrooms and kitchens. R11 and above are recommended for outdoor use, wet rooms, and commercial spaces. Higher numbers mean more grip.
Can I see tiles in person before buying?
Absolutely — that is the whole point. TileFinder connects you with local shops that have real showrooms. Once you find a tile you like, contact the shop and visit to see samples, get advice on laying patterns, and check stock levels in person.
How do I calculate how many tiles I need?
Each tile listing shows the tiles per m² figure. Measure your area in square metres (length × width), then multiply by the tiles per m² number. Always add 10–15% extra for cuts and waste. Your local shop can also help you calculate this.
What is the difference between porcelain and ceramic?
Porcelain tiles are fired at higher temperatures and are denser, harder, and more water-resistant than ceramic. Porcelain is suitable for floors, walls, and outdoor use. Ceramic is lighter, easier to cut, and typically more affordable — ideal for walls and light-use floors indoors.
Can outdoor tiles be used indoors?
Yes, outdoor-rated tiles can be used indoors. They are frost-proof and slip-resistant, so they work well in hallways, kitchens, and conservatories. Indoor-only tiles should not be used outside as they may crack in frost.
