What Is Through-Body Porcelain?

Through-body porcelain, sometimes called full-body porcelain or colour-body porcelain (depending on the manufacturing method), is a type of porcelain tile where the colour and composition extend throughout the thickness of the tile rather than being confined to a decorative surface layer.

It is commonly used in commercial buildings, shopping centres, airports and other areas subject to heavy foot traffic, where long-term durability is particularly important.

Although through-body porcelain offers several advantages, it is not automatically the best choice for every installation. For many homes, a high-quality glazed porcelain tile provides excellent durability while offering a much wider choice of colours, patterns and finishes.

How Is Through-Body Porcelain Made?

Most porcelain tiles begin with a finely blended mixture of clay, feldspar, silica and other natural minerals.

With through-body porcelain, coloured minerals and pigments are mixed throughout the body of the tile before it is pressed and fired at very high temperatures.

As a result, the colour runs through the entire thickness of the tile rather than existing only on the surface.

What Is Glazed Porcelain?

Glazed porcelain is manufactured differently.

After the porcelain body has been formed, a decorative glaze is applied to the surface before firing.

Modern digital printing technology allows manufacturers to reproduce highly realistic designs, including:

The decorative layer is protected by a durable fired glaze, making glazed porcelain suitable for the vast majority of residential applications.

What Is the Difference?

The main difference lies in where the decorative finish is located.

Through-Body Porcelain

  • Colour extends throughout the tile.
  • Minor edge chips may be less noticeable.
  • Often used in commercial environments.
  • Usually available in simpler colours and designs.

Glazed Porcelain

  • Decorative surface created by a fired glaze.
  • Huge choice of colours, patterns and effects.
  • Excellent stain resistance.
  • Widely used in homes and commercial buildings.

Neither system is inherently better — the most suitable choice depends on the application.

When Does Through-Body Porcelain Matter?

Through-body porcelain is particularly beneficial in areas subject to:

If a corner or edge becomes chipped, the exposed material is often similar in colour to the rest of the tile, making minor damage less obvious.

Is Through-Body Porcelain Better for Homes?

Not necessarily.

For kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms and hallways, a quality glazed porcelain tile usually provides more than enough durability for everyday use.

In addition, glazed porcelain offers:

For most homeowners, appearance is often a more important consideration than the additional wear characteristics offered by through-body porcelain.

What Is Colour-Body Porcelain?

Colour-body porcelain occupies a position between traditional glazed porcelain and true through-body porcelain.

The decorative surface is still created using a glaze, but the body of the tile is manufactured in a similar colour to the surface design.

If a small edge chip occurs, it may be less visible than on a conventional glazed porcelain tile with a contrasting body colour.

Many premium porcelain collections now use colour-body technology.

Common Misunderstandings

"Through-body porcelain never chips."

No. Like any ceramic product, it can chip if subjected to sufficient impact. However, because the colour extends through the tile, minor chips may be less noticeable.

"Glazed porcelain is weaker."

No. A high-quality glazed porcelain tile is extremely durable and suitable for most domestic and many commercial applications. The presence of a glaze does not mean the tile is structurally weaker.

"Through-body porcelain always lasts longer."

Not necessarily. In many residential settings, both glazed and through-body porcelain can provide decades of service when correctly installed and maintained. The difference is most noticeable in demanding commercial environments.

Which Should You Choose?

For most homeowners, glazed porcelain offers the best combination of durability, design choice and value.

Through-body porcelain may be worth considering where:

Choosing the right tile should always take into account both the intended use and the desired appearance.

Conclusion

Through-body porcelain is designed to provide exceptional durability by carrying its colour throughout the thickness of the tile. This can make minor chips less noticeable and makes it particularly suitable for demanding commercial environments.

However, this does not mean glazed porcelain is inferior. Thanks to advances in glazing and digital printing, glazed porcelain now offers outstanding durability together with an enormous range of realistic designs and finishes. For most homes, it remains the preferred choice, while through-body porcelain continues to excel where maximum wear resistance is required.
