What Is a Decoupling Mat?

A decoupling mat is a specialist membrane installed between the substrate and the tiled surface to help reduce the transfer of lateral movement into the tile installation. Although it is hidden beneath the finished floor, it plays an important role in many modern tile installations, particularly where porcelain tiles, large-format tiles or underfloor heating are used.
